what is
hydroponics?
Hydroponics is the science of growing plants without the need of soil. The term hydroponics is derived from the Greek word “hydro” meaning water and the Latin word “ponos” meaning labour, i.e. water performing work.
Plants are grown in an inert, sterile growing medium and fed a mixture of water and nutrients – in essence a very basic principle.
Plants and fruits grown hydroponically will develop optimum levels of appearance, yield and flavour. More plants can also be grown in much smaller spaces and can be grown anywhere and anytime.

I am the founder and director of GROW IT YOURSELF (GIY) Hydroponics. I was introduced to the science of hydroponics during my undergraduate studies in plant physiology at the University of the Free State (“UFS”) in 2001-2003. I completed my honours and master’s degrees in Botany in 2004-2006 where after I started my professional career in the environmental management industry focusing on the quality and management of water resources.
In 2010 I enrolled for post-graduate studies in geohydrology (groundwater sciences) at the Institute for Groundwater Studies (“IGS”) at UFS. I completed my master’s degree in geohydrology in 2011 and for my thesis I investigated the capability of plants to decontaminate polluted groundwater using hydroponics in a technique known as rhizofiltration.
In my professional career I focused on the management and protection of surface and groundwater resources but my passion for plant physiology and hydroponics has always remained and travelled with me wherever I went.
Due to exponential population growth, the destruction of natural habitats, water scarcity and availability of space, hydroponics and aquaponics will become the farming method of the future because it uses less water and nutrients, needs less space and is environmentally safe.
The specialised nutrient range of GIY Hydroponics was not only developed for the hobby enthusiast but also for the commercial grower with maximum yields in mind and is a proudly South African product. An interesting fact is that a large proportion of cut flowers and vegetables available from our supermarkets today are hydroponically grown, why not grow it yourself and supply yourself and your family.
There are a few rules and technicalities when it comes to hydroponic growing, for instance what is pH and EC and why is it important, what is the correct pH and EC, do different species have different requirements, how much nutrients should I supply, when to give more of what and what type of system and growing medium should I use…? All of these can be learned along the way, just start to GROW IT YOURSELF (“GIY”) and you will learn all the tricks of the trade having fun along the way.I

SPECIALISED NUTRIENTS
All our specialised nutrients are twin pack formulations in A and B granule products and when used in equal volumes it makes a complete and balanced nutrient solution. Made up to stock volume it is 100-times concentrated. For instance, a 5L A and B will make a minimum of 500L complete hydroponic solution.
Lettuce-gro A&B
Specifically formulated for leafy lettuce and leafy herbs including coriander, parsley, dill, basil, rocket, watercress, mint, etc. Can also be used on strawberries. Use A and B for a complete nutrient solution.

REGULATORS
